A tragic accident in Mommenheim (Bas-Rhin) has claimed the lives of a father and his teenage son. According to the Strasbourg prosecutor’s office, the 13-year-old boy, who was seriously injured on Sunday, August 24, died on Wednesday, August 27, three days after the crash that had already cost his father his life.
A Family Ride Turns Tragic
On Sunday afternoon, around 4 p.m., the 46-year-old father and his son set off for a short ride aboard a Vanderhall Venice, a powerful three-wheeled roadster. The outing took place on Rue de Rome, on a stretch of road temporarily closed to traffic as part of a solidarity event organized in the village north of Strasbourg.
For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle suddenly left the road and struck a tree.
Immediate Emergency Response
When emergency services arrived, firefighters found that the driver had been ejected from the vehicle by the impact. Despite rapid intervention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His 13-year-old son, who was riding as a passenger, was trapped in the wreckage and had to be extricated in order to receive emergency resuscitation. Placed in critical condition, he was rushed to the CHU de Hautepierre in Strasbourg. Despite intensive care, the teenager—who was soon to celebrate his 14th birthday—succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.
A Community in Shock
The double tragedy has cast a heavy shadow over Mommenheim, where the solidarity event was meant to bring people together. Instead, the accident has left the community grieving and searching for answers. An investigation has been opened to determine how the roadster lost control on the closed-off section.
For local residents and participants in the event, what was meant to be a moment of joy has become a painful reminder of how fragile life can be.
